ETHICS
Ethics is a set of moral principles that guide behaviour. As opinions may vary over what is right or what is wrong. Ethics is a subjective concept.
Why should professionals behave ethically?
i) Ethical issue may be a matter of law and regulations, professionals are expected to apply them.
ii) To protect the profession’s reputation and standing.
iii) As professional’s ethical behaviour serves the public interest.
Ethical guidelines:
Following are the fundamental principles of ethical guidelines
Integrity:
Members must be striaghtforward and professional in all business relationships.
Objectivity:
Members should avoid all bias, prejudice and partiality.
Professional competence & due care:
Members must not perform roles which they cannot do without reasonable care, competence and diligence. They must stay technically up to date.
Confidentiality:
Members sholud not disclose confidential information without permission or legal or professional right or duty.
Professional behaviour:
Members shouls protect their reputation and that of the professional body.
Professional and technical standards:
Members must comply with professional standards and stay technically up to date.
QUALITIES OF A PROFESSIONAL:
Reliability:
Your work is what was asked for and is delivered on time.
Responsibility:
You take ownership of your work and conduct yourself in a manner that respects positions of trust given to you.
Timeliness:
You are on time for work and appointments.
Courtesy:
You conduct yourself with courtesy and consideration to those you meet.
Respect:
You develop constructive relationships and recognise the values and rights of others.
